Medical supervision

Your anticoagulant control will be supervised by Dr Paul Harper, Consultant Haematologist. Dr Harper is an experienced specialist Haematologist with expertise in the management of anticoagulant therapy.




Dr Harper trained in medicine at Sheffield University in the United Kingdom. During his haematology training he worked under the supervision of Prof Leon Poller in Manchester. Prof Poller developed the INR which is used internationally to monitor warfarin therapy.


Dr Harper carried out research at Cambridge University UK. His main research interest is the genetic causes of venous and arterial thrombosis which is the subject of his doctoral thesis. Dr Harper has continued research in the same field since coming to New Zealand and is supervising a research project in Auckland investigating the role of a recently identified protein involved in blood coagulation.
Dr Harper has published extensively in medical research journals and has contributed to a major coagulation text book. He has taught undergraduate and post graduate students in Cambridge University in the UK and at Auckland Medical School. He has spoken at many national and international meetings and has been an examiner for the Royal College of pathologists of Australasia and examined several PhD candidates.
Dr Harper is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
